Mannar Historical Back Ground
The District of Mannar is located on the North East part of Srilanka.The two main components of Mannar District consists of the Island of Mannar and the Mannar Main land and the Island are Connected by a Causeway and a bridge, According to ancestors the Name Mannar,is derived from the Sea Stream which Flows under the Mannar bridge which is sandy in nature. In Tamil Sand is "Manal and stream is "Aaru Thus Manal Aru' which later become Mannar means sandy stream in Tamil Besides, Manthai West which is the largest Division in Mannar District Was one of the Famous and busiest port in Srilanka in the years gone by the now called Manthai Was Called Mathottam, Manthottam,Matheeththa City. Maha theertha, Ealis City, in Srilanka and this area was occupied by Tamils Thus according to Historical Evidences Administrative rule in Manthottam Was by the Tamil who resided here this is even before the advent of Vijayan to Srilanka.
